Outsider Tip
The modern sport of polo had its beginnings in the 1860s in Punjab, India, when British officers took up a game they had seen played by local horsemen. The game was introduced in England in 1869 and in America by 1876. Polo is now played around the world in more than 75 countries.
Pack up your picnic and pile into the car for an afternoon of polo, an exciting equestrian team sport that blends the incredible excitement of sheer thoroughbred horsepower with the uncanny marksmanship of riders who swing their mallets from atop the back of a galloping 1,000-pound animal.
The game’s on every Saturday at Tinicum Park, where you can pull your car right up to the sidelines and watch. Expect crowds numbering anywhere from 500 to 3,000, depending on the weather and who the home team is playing.
COME PREPARED
There's a single entry/spectator fee per car. You can buy soft drinks at the park but you'll need to bring your own picnic. Fido's welcome, too, as long as he stays on a leash!
